PRINCIPAL INTERIOR DESIGNER, SOPHIE GOINEAU
Sophie Goineau is the founder and principal interior designer of her eponymous Los Angeles based design firm. Goineau’s fully integrated approach to luxury residential and hospitality design represents her desire to merge culture, schools of thought, and aesthetic influences for spaces and experiences that provoke emotion while providing a refined comfort and functional beauty.
Goineau's design style is directly tied to her origins in Quebec where her grandfather was a woodworker and her father built high-end condominiums. Being introduced to the beauty and refinement of textile work and materiality from a young age, Goineau grew to cherish these principles and prioritize them in her own work. By age 11, she was working directly with her father. She later attended business school and a professional interior design program, then became a stylist, working for the likes of Elle magazine in Europe.
In 1997, she co-founded Moderno, the streamlined furniture line drawing on earlier Bauhaus traditions to create fixtures designed to harmonize and blend into the interiors around them. Ranging from finely crafted coffee tables to armchairs and bedroom furnishings, the furniture complemented both residential and commercial spaces with uncompromising craftsmanship and originality. Moderno was also named Montreal Designer of the Year.
While working with Sid Lee Architecture as a senior interior designer, Goineau collaborated with a team of architects and artisans for projects involving luxury real estate and spas. Notably, she created custom furniture and bespoke wallpaper for the interior of the floating spa, Bota Bota in Montreal.
Goineau is equally rigorous when conceptualizing residential spaces, “The process of creating a visual language for a project is immersive,” she says. “The inception is really hard, but the results are unique.”
Most recently, Goineau lead the restoration of a midcentury Beverly Hills home by adding a modernist twist with high craft and fine furniture design traditions. In addition she is in the works for the interior creation of a Malibu Villa, and a Porta Villa Palm Desert upcoming location.
